SAVANNAH, GA – Savannah Speech and Hearing Center (SSHC) is proud to announce we received the 2023-24 Women United Transportation Fund Mini-Grant from United Way of the Coastal Empire to help eliminate transportation barriers in our community. United Way of the Coastal Empire’s Women Who Rule event, held annually in March, raises funds for residents across our region who need dependable transportation.

United Way’s Women United Transportation Fund connects community members to dependable transportation to get to work, school, medical appointments, and vital access to resources like food, job training, and other important services. The fund provides gas cards, bus passes, and may even cover minor car repairs to ensure reliable transportation.

This fund has made an extraordinary difference for several SSHC clients – enabling survivors of stroke living with physical impairments to make it to our center for weekly support group meetings, in easing the financial burden of families of limited means who travel sometimes over an hour each way for their children’s therapy appointments, and also in helping cochlear implant candidates travel to Jacksonville for surgery.

ABOUT UNITED WAY OF THE COASTAL EMPIRE

The mission of United Way of the Coastal Empire is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community. United Way is a volunteer-driven organization serving Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties that involves hundreds of community leaders, professionals, and other volunteers in every aspect of our business, including fundraising, marketing, and funding decisions, to ensure that donations are truly making a difference. Thanks to the Herschel V. Jenkins Trust Fund and other income, most of the operating expenses of the organization are covered, allowing more donor contributions to go where they’re most needed in service to the community.
