Mayor Van Johnson to Celebrate “March for Meals” with Meals on Wheels Delivery Monday, March 18th
WHO: Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people age successfully, and Savannah Mayor Van Johnson will celebrate “March For Meals” to fight senior hunger at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 18.
WHAT: SCI will celebrate the national “March for Meals” campaign with a brief press conference at 10:00 a.m. During the press conference, the Mayor and SCI President Patti Lyons will share thoughts regarding the importance and positive impact of the Meals on Wheels program that provides both nutritional support and a wellness check to older adults in the Coastal Empire. After his comments, the Mayor will deliver meals to a few of the 1,800 seniors who benefit from SCI’s Meals on Wheels program each day.
This month, Senior Citizens, Inc. and the entire Meals on Wheels network will celebrate March for Meals. This annual celebration commemorates the historic day in March of 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years of age and older. This 50-year-old vital public-private partnership provides millions of seniors with essential services that help them remain healthier and independent at home.
