SCI on Track to Deliver Its 7 Millionth Meal Later This Year

SAVANNAH, GA – Mayor Van Johnson joined Senior Citizens Inc. (SCI) on Friday, March 28 to participate in March for Meals, a national campaign raising awareness for Meals on Wheels and the critical role it plays in supporting older adults in coastal Georgia. During the event, Mayor Johnson delivered meals to local recipients, reinforcing the impact of SCI’s work in the community.

This year’s event carried special significance as SCI prepares to deliver its 7 millionth meal later this year-a major milestone reflecting decades of dedication to ensuring older adults receive nutritious meals, wellness checks, and social connection.

“Meals on Wheels is about so much more than food-it’s a connection, a check-in, and a lifeline for older adults who might otherwise go unseen,” said SCI President Patti Lyons. “We are incredibly proud of our history and deeply grateful for the support that allows us to continue serving those in need.”

March for Meals: A Legacy of Support

During the event, Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of continued funding and volunteer support to sustain programs like Meals on Wheels.

“Ensuring that older adults in our community have access to nutritious meals and companionship is a responsibility we all share,” said Mayor Johnson. “I am honored to be part of this effort and to see firsthand the difference that Meals on Wheels makes in people’s lives.”

The Need for Continued Support

SCI serves more than 1,800 older adults daily through its Meals on Wheels program, providing freshly prepared meals and regular wellness visits. However, with an aging population and rising food costs, the need for support is greater than ever. SCI encourages volunteers, donors, and advocates to join their mission to help older adults live healthier, more independent lives.
