Georgia Tech to Host Coding Boot Camp Informational Session
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Due to the ongoing community interest in obtaining university-accredited web development training, Georgia Tech-Savannah is offering a third coding boot camp to begin November 7, 2017. An informational open house, to be held on Wednesday, October 11, from 6-8 p.m.at Bull Street Labs (2222 Bull Street), will be held for interested employers and students to learn about the 24-week program, review the curriculum, hear about tuition reimbursement opportunities, and network with area coding professionals.
The boot camp will cover everything from the basics of coding, algorithms and data structure, to intensive training in Javascript, Node.js, HTML, CSS, jQuery, C#, and more. In addition to learning in the classroom, students will spend 10-15 hours each week on outside projects and experiential learning activities to build a professional project portfolio that showcases their abilities to create web applications. Successful graduates will earn a Georgia Tech certificate in full stack development.
Area employers interested in sending employees to the coding boot camp are eligible to receive as much as a 90 percent tuition reimbursement via Incumbent Worker Training (IWT) grants provided by the Coastal Workforce Investment Board (CWIB). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, web development ranks among the world’s fastest-growing professions, with jobs projected to increase at a 20 percent annual pace through 2022. The opportunities for skilled developers have long passed the labor supply: Of more than 150,000 new openings posted each year, some 50,000 go unfilled. The median salary for professional web developers is $63,000, with some earning as much as $110,000 a year.
“A career in web development can offer unthinkable opportunities for inspiring work and professional growth,” said Diane Lee, director of the Georgia Tech-Savannah campus. “The Georgia Tech Coding Boot Camp is the only university-backed coding boot camp in the state of Georgia and is a great career opportunity for an underserved market in Savannah.”
The course is designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals and students, with two three-hour evening classes during the week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.) and a four-hour class on Saturdays (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.). Georgia-Tech Savannah’s inaugural coding boot camp completed August 2017, with 20 participants. Cohort number two began in May with a completion date of October 2017. Many of the students already had positions with various local companies such as Daniels Defense, Byrd Cookie Company and Savannah Economic Development Authority, but the students who were not working at the time have all found employment locally thanks to their Georgia Tech Savannah Coding Boot Camp certification.
