SAVANNAH, GA -Today, April 25th, clients of Senior Citizens Inc.’s (SCI) Meals on Wheels program are receiving something extra special on their plates: a dish created by Mashama Bailey, James Beard Award-winning chef and co-founder of Savannah’s nationally celebrated restaurant, The Grey.
The flavorful dish, inspired by Indian and Caribbean culinary traditions, is part of a special collaboration with local chefs such as Chef Bailey, and Senior Citizens Inc. (SCI) to celebrate the organization’s 65th anniversary. Her involvement is the latest feature in SCI’s ongoing 65th Anniversary Celebration, which brings local renowned chefs into the Meals on Wheels kitchen to create exciting, nutritious meals for homebound older adults.
On April 24th, Chef Bailey visited the Meals on Wheels kitchen to teach staff how to prepare her flavorful Chicken Roti-a dish of spiced chicken thighs inspired by Indian and Caribbean culinary traditions. Chef Bailey explained her marinating process, the role of each spice in building the flavor profile, and the cultural history behind the recipe.
Now, the dish is being delivered to hundreds of older adults across coastal Georgia, inviting clients to explore a world of flavor from the comfort of their own homes.
“Our clients may not have had many opportunities to experience global cuisines, such as Chicken Roti” said Patti Lyons, President of Senior Citizens Inc. “This dish does more than nourish-it encourages curiosity, expands palates, and reminds our clients that they are never too old to try something new.”
Chef Bailey’s involvement is the latest in SCI’s collaboration with local restaurateurs, which brings acclaimed chefs into the Meals on Wheels kitchen to create exciting, nutritious, and culturally rich meals. All participants are passionate about giving back to the community and sharing their craft in a meaningful way.
“We’re proud to offer meals that not only support health and independence, but also tell a story,” Lyons said. “With partners like Chef Bailey, we continue to push the boundaries of what Meals on Wheels can be.”
This special collaboration is one of many events and initiatives being held throughout 2025 to commemorate SCI’s 65 years of service to older adults in coastal Georgia. SCI gratefully acknowledges the generous support of its anniversary sponsors, who are helping make these moments of joy and connection possible.
SCI’s 65th Anniversary Celebration Sponsors include the Kole Family, Colonial Group, Innomed, Sterling Seacrest Pritchard, and Gulfstream.
