Social Media Lessons From Casper

For those of you struggling with social media, it can be difficult to find businesses that do social media really, really well. However, one of the companies that does do social engagement well is Casper Mattress Company. They don’t use expensive tactics either, just good old-fashioned creativity and understanding of their target.

Talking about mattresses is boring. Instead of talking about boring mattress stats, Casper talks about the culture of sleep. They talk about boozy night caps, lazy Saturdays spent in bed, and which side of the bed is reserved for the remote or dog. Now, those are conversation starters!

Check out the above comparison of Casper vs. Tempur-Pedic USA’s New Year’s posts. Casper posted something hilarious and received more than 1,000 likes, while Tempur-Pedic posted about how they’re going to take on the New Year and only got 27. Also, take a look at the pictures used. Casper’s post features a man wearing pajamas in bed(with champagne and crazy glasses), while Tempur-Pedic’s is about boxing, which doesn’t really relate to their product.

Your social media strategy is not for you, but for your customers. Everyone can relate to hitting the snooze button and even laugh about drinking champagne in bed (oh, come on, everyone has done it;). But, not as many people can debate with you on thread count numbers.

In a nutshell: find a post-worthy story angle that will encourage your customers to share with their friends. Don’t try to sell on a single post; it’s boring. Convince them slowly through great content and listening to their needs.
