In a recent article that I read in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “Breaking the Ice – Networking Tips,” I was reminded of how eager I was as a young professional and especially how self-conscious you are when your cutting your teeth, so to speak. I have found that a few helpful practices can make all of the difference in the world when networking in the professional arena.
Here are a few of my favorites:
- Arrive early.
- Offer your card at the end of a conversation, not at the beginning.
- Look at the card and ask questions.
- Keep pad and pen handy for notes.
- Involve others in your conversation.
- Introduce yourself to the host and thank him or her when you leave.
- Overdress, not under-dress.
- Smile.
After a few rounds of working the scene, you’ll feel like an old pro. Trust me, these old habits should never be broken and can make all of the difference in the world – especially the notion that a smile can take you anywhere you want to go!
